Cowrie shells in Ghana historically served as a primary currency and a symbol of wealth, fertility, and spiritual protection before colonialism. Originating from the Indian Ocean, these shiny, porcelain-like shells are deeply ingrained in Akan culture—the name of Ghana's currency, the cedi, derives from the Akan word for cowrie. Today, they remain significant in traditional attire, jewelry, and art.
