FEATURING
front: ancient galley ship, representing the trade of the Island, based on a painting on the jug of the 7th century B.C
Ships provided the link between Cyprus and the surrounding world, and the island was renowned for its shipbuilding. The vessel here is clearly provided with a mast, a sail shown furled, and a pair of steering oars. Of particular interest is the bird's head ornamenting the stern. This feature seems to have originated in the Aegean during the prehistoric period, and it survived well into the first millennium B.C.
back: Cyprus coat of arms
A dove holding an olive twig and the independence year 1960, Cypriot independence from British rule, laurel twigs around
The background is a copper-yellow colour; this symbolises the large deposits of copper ore on Cyprus (chiefly in the form of chalcopyrite, which is yellow in colour).
Country name in Greek and Turkish (Republic of Cyprus)
