Brazil 20 Réis {1868-1870} 3S

Pedro II

FEATURING
front: Imperial Coat of Arms

A green field, a gold armillary sphere superimposed on a cross of the Order of Christ, the sphere encircled by 19 silver stars on a blue circle; and an imperial crown with diamonds set atop the shield, the sides of which will be embraced by two plants of coffee and tobacco, as emblems of its [the Empire's] riches, in their proper colors and tied at the bottom with the national bow-knot.

The number of stars in the coat of arms reflected the number of provinces in the Brazilian Empire.

back: Portrait of Pedro II, emperor of Brazil between 1831 and 1889
lettering:
PETRUS II D.G.C.IMP. ET PERP.BRAS.DEF.
1868

Pedro II steadfastly pushed through the abolition of slavery despite opposition from powerful political and economic interests. A savant in his own right, the Emperor established a reputation as a vigorous sponsor of learning, culture and the sciences.
