The coat of arms of Brazil was created on November 19, 1889, four days after Brazil became a republic.

In the blue circle in the center, the Southern Cross (Portuguese: Cruzeiro do Sul) can be seen. The ring of 27 stars around it represents Brazil's 26 states and the Federal District.

The First Brazilian Republic or República Velha (Portuguese pronunciation: [ʁeˈpublikɐ ˈvɛʎɐ], "Old Republic") is the period of Brazilian history from 1889 to 1930. The República Velha ended in 1930 with a military coup, also known as Brazilian Revolution of 1930 that installed Getúlio Vargas as a dictator.

back: outer rim shows the national motto of the First Republic of Brazil, "Ordem e Progresso" (order and progress) and the date of the coup d'état, which took place on November 15th, 1889.
